“Straighten up your face and act like you want to be here.” My mother scolded.

After we left the club the other night, I intently failed to mention the party that Noel had invited us to. While in town today, my mother ran into his mother and when asked if we were still coming to the party, my mother told her we knew nothing about it. Imagine being fussed at by Karisma Nikols and then being drug to a party that you had every intention of skipping.

“I don’t want to be here.” I mumbled under my breath.

Clinching her teeth, my mother looked at me and frowned. “You heard what I said.” Pushing the button on the Ring doorbell, she gave me the fakest smile before facing the door. I could hear Ami laughing behind me. Being childish, I flipped her the bird.

The front door of the Dupont estate opened and there stood my nemesis.

“Mrs. Nikols, I’m so glad you could make it.”

“Thank you, Noel… No thanks to my daughter.” Throwing me under the bus, she muttered the last part. Placing the bottle of Dom Pérignon in Noel's hand, she continued. “Mr. Nikols couldn’t make it, so he sends his congratulations to Ameer.”

“I’ll be sure to let Meer know.” Stepping back from the door, he used his hand to usher us inside. “Come on in. The ladies are in the dining room.”

My mother was the first to enter. Instead of following behind her, I stood there. I instantly started to feel like my feet were glued to the ground.

“Don’t mind if we do.” Ami snickered and stepped around me, leaving me with no choice but to go inside. When she made it to the doorway where Noel stood, she took the bottle of champagne out of his hand and walked into the house.

“You have to excuse her, she doesn’t get out much.” I laughed, and stepped through the door.

“She good. Meer would’ve opened it the second he had it in his possession.”

“Where is he?”

“Running late, per usual. You know, Meer thinks everyone is on his time.” Noel joked.

“Guess it’s a family trait because at one point, you thought the same.” I jabbed.

Sighing deeply, Noel shook his head and walked away.

I mean, there must’ve been some truth to what I said because he got in his feelings. The best thing for me to do was to mingle and attempt to enjoy as much of this party as I could until my mother decided that she was ready to go.
